Enteric fever
Introduction:
Typhoid
fever is caused by the germ salmonella typhoid and is spread by patients,
carriers, food and water. It may also spread by flies. It is characterized by
fever, feeble pulse eruptions and abdominal signs. It is primarily infection of
intestines. The incubation period is 3-25 day.
Intestinal fever
Signs and symptoms:
The onset of disease
is slow with headache, constipation and epitasis. Temperature rises during the
1st week in stepladder fashion. During the 2nd week it remains sustained' at
about 101F to 103F and during the third and fourth weeks it gradually falls to
normal. The pulse is relatively slow. The spleen is palpable. There may be
abdominal pain and loose motions. Intestinal hemorrhage and perforation may
occur during 3rd week.
Most common
symptoms:
Yellow sulfa appear on
first day of disease.
Remittent fever is in
first week. Loss of appetite, bed smell in urine & stool
Investigation:
- Blood complete picture
- Widely test or typhoid
- Urine and stool for
culture.
Treatment:
Antibiotic, anti
amebic and anti pyretic according to body weight.
Diet:
Recommended diet in
enteric fever is light diet. If a patient violates the conditions about diet,
intestinal perforation may occur as complication.
Light and high caloric
diet in enteric fever is helps the patient to stability.
Complication:
- Intestinal
perforation
- Pericardial effusion
when typhoid repeated every year.
- Loss of memory for
two or three days in condition of unmanaged high grade fever.
- Anemia
Preventive
measures:
- T-A-B Vaccine
- In repeat typhoid,
use ciprofloxacin for 21 day after Doctor Advice.
Healthy tip:
If five gram of Tragacanth
Gum dip in 250 ml water at evening then drink at fasting for 15 days. It is better
for the health of intestine. It is a good remedy of irregular bowels which may
helps salmonella to growth.
