Introduction:a

Asthma is a disease that affects your lungs. It is one of the most common and long-lived diseases in children, but adults can also develop the disease. Asthma causes snoring, wheezing, chest tightness, and coughing at night or in the morning.

Causes:

The causes of asthama are often difficult to determine,

however:-

a. In some cases a definite sensitivity (allergy) to protein is found which may ae of animal such as fur, feathers or vegitables such as pollen.

b. Emotional factors may be play a part.

c. In some intances infection of the respiratory tract or paranasal sinuses may be responsible.

d. Hereditary tendency is a facter in some cases.

 Signs & symptoms:

a. Asthamatic attacks usually occur at night, the patient is awakened by extreme breathlessness.

b. He sits up at bed to breath.

c. The expiratory effort is extreme, wheezing can often be heard from a distance.

d. The patient face is congested and sometimes cyanotic.

e. Repeated attacks may follow one another in quick session and exhaust the patient. This codition is known as status asthamaticus.

Treatment:

a. During asthamatic attack patient may have an inhaler which when squeezed produces a fine spray of an antispasmodic drug into lungs such as ventoline inhaler.

b. Steroids such as solucortef should be given as injectable.

c. Nebulization should must aply.

d. Oxygen inhalation alleviates dyspnoea and cynosis.

f. A combination of ephedrine and aminophyline is often ordered as follow up.

g. Breathing exercise.

h. The balance diet
