Diarrhea continuing from weeks, near, or above two months is called chronic diarrhea. There are five types of this diarrhea.

1.    Osmotic Diarrhea

This type of diarrhea is caused by ingestion of an osmotic active substance that puts a force. Which draws fluid into the intestinal lumen. The increased volume exceeds the colon’s capacity for reabsorption in diarrhea.

Signs and symptoms: smell in stool, deficiency of nutrition, weight loss, and osmotic gaps.

Causes: The common causes are episodes of gastroenteritis, Laxative abuse, pancreatic insufficiency, Whipple, s disease, and overgrowth of bacteria.

2.    Secretory diarrhea

The active intestinal secretion of fluid and electrolytes has decreased, the absorption resulting in diarrhea. It may be large in volume with a normal somatic gap. The volume of fluid and electrolytes may be decreased to 1-10 L/d.

3.    Inflammatory  diarrhea

Inflammatory diarrhea develops due to damage to the mucosal cells so that there is impaired intestinal absorption and excessive secretion of fluid resulting in diarrhea. That may contain blood. The patient presents with fever, abdominal tenderness, and blood in the stool.

4.    Abnormal motility diarrhea

In this type of diarrhea volume and weight of stool are not increased but defection occurs due to stasis of intestinal contents and bacterial overgrowth. It results in malabsorption and diarrhea.

5.    Diarrhea due to chronic infection

The common causes of this type of diarrhea are infection, inflammatory bowel disease, an endocrine disorder, malabsorption, irritable bowel syndrome, and laxative abuse. The more causes are Giardia lambia, entameba histolytica, and abdominal TB.
